CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS
The 23rd annual workshop of the European Research Network on Transitions in Youth (TIY) will take place in Brno, Czech Republic on 2-5 September 2015. The workshop will be hosted by the Office for Population Studies, Masaryk University.
The theme for this year’s workshop is:
Socio-Economic Mobility of the Youth: Opportunities and Challenges
Labour market entry has become particularly challenging in recent years in Europe as well as in many other regions. Youth unemployment has been rising since the 1970s, despite predictions that it would only be short-lived. The recent economic downturn deepened youth labour market disadvantage, which includes (but is not limited to) increased vulnerability at work, over-qualification, lower and unstable earnings levels, underemployment, and rising risk of unemployment. The school-to-work transition, as well as other important life transitions (such as establishment of an independent household or formation of a partnership union), seem to have become more heterogeneous, less standardized, prolonged, postponed, or even avoided as a consequence.
For the 23rd annual TIY workshop, the Network Committee invites authors to submit contributions concerning the area of youth transitions, especially – but not exclusively – the transition from education to the labour market. The committee also encourages authors to revisit the questions concerning the impact on youth transitions of the Great Recession, informing others about any recent developments or the latest projections. Particularly welcome are papers employing a comparative perspective that could explain what socio-economic, institutional, cultural, or political factors shape patterns of transitions in youth. The following areas will be given particular attention:
- Transitions within education and between education and work (and vice versa). This may include the analysis of the decision to (or not to) graduate, to combine work and training, or to resume education after a period of employment.
- Transitions within the labour market as well as into and out of the labour market. This may include investigations of employment entries and exits, intra-generational job/occupation mobility, transitions between part-time and full-time work, as well as job security and precarity.
- Consequences and correlates of the school-to-work transition on poverty, partnership formation, fertility, health and well-being.
The Network Committee does not regard this list of suggested themes as a complete, let alone exclusive, list of topics to be addressed. On the contrary, the Network Committee welcomes contributions on all aspects of the transition from youth to adulthood or the transition from education to the labour market.
Anyone who wishes to present a paper at the workshop should send a one-page abstract by email to the address indicated below by 22 March, 2015. In keeping with our usual procedures, abstracts will be assessed for selection by the members of the Network Committee on the basis of their quality and relevance to the theme of the workshop. Authors will be notified of the decision regarding their paper by 30 April, 2015 at the latest.
The conference fee is set at €550 and includes four nights of accommodation, lunches and social events (including conference dinner). Since only a limited number of places will be available, anyone who wishes to attend the conference without presenting a paper should notify the conference organisers as soon as possible. In order to ensure the smooth running of the workshop, participants should register and pay the conference fee before 30 June, 2015 to be guaranteed accommodation organized by the workshop staff.
For papers to be made available in advance to workshop participants, final (electronic) versions should reach the local organisers at the very latest by 20 August, 2015.
