Travel information

Here you will find detailed instructions, information and tips on how to get from the place of arrival to the hotel.

How to get to Brno city centre and the hotel

As the second largest city in the Czech Republic, Brno is relatively easy to reach by train, bus, and airplane. Regardless of any particular mode of transportation, upon arrival, visitors to Brno are most likely to find themselves in the city centre (or within a reasonable distance) from which it only takes maximum 15 minutes to reach the hotel.

Below you will find detailed instructions concerning the best route from the place of arrival to the Continental hotel (address: Kounicova 6). In case of any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact workshop's local organizers via tiy2015@fss.muni.cz

Payment options - local currency (Czech Koruna - CZK) is needed to buy public transport tickets. Concerning taxi, the payment options depend on individual service providers.

Exchange offices - money can be exchanged at all three airports (Brno Airport, Prague Airport, Vienna Airport) and at the Main Train Station.

(1) BY PLANE

Brno International Airport

Brno has an international airport so if possible, flights can be arranged directly to Brno. Scheduled flights to Brno are from London-Stansted (Monday-Sunday, arrival at 17:00), London-Luton (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, arrival at 10:40), and Eindhoven (Monday, Friday, arrival at 10:55).

There are several options how to get from Brno Airport to Brno city centre and to the hotel. The most straightforward mode of transportation is a taxi. On the Brno Airport’s website, one particular service provider is recommended (City Taxi), although other options might also be available. The drive from the airport to the hotel takes approximately 20 minutes and costs approximately 450 CZK/€17 (payment in Euros should be possible). Taxis are stationed directly outside the arrival hall of the airport.

Alternatively, public transport can also be used (bus and tram). One 60 minute ticket costs 25 CZK (approx. €0,90) and comfortably covers the entire journey. Tickets can be bought at the airport (vending machine or newsagent’s shop in both arrival and departure halls; exchange office is also located at the airport):

  • First take a bus number 76 (bus stop is located outside the departure hall of the airport) which will take you to the city centre (the last stop on the route “Main Station/ Hlavni nadrazi”). The journey takes approximately 20-30 minutes. (The bus service is operational every day between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. and departs every 30 minutes).
  • Once there, change to tram number 12 (direction "Technolologicky park"; middle platform) or tram number 4 (direction "Namesti miru"; right platform) and continue to “Česká” stop. The journey takes approximately 6 minutes.
  • From Česká street it is only a short walk to the hotel (approximately 5 minute walk, see map or picture guide).

Lastly, public transport and taxi can be combined. Take a bus number 76 and upon reaching the city centre (“Main Station/ Hlavni nadrazi”), take a taxi (taxi station is in the same general area as the bus stop). The short drive to the hotel should cost approximately 100 CZK (approx. €4), depending on the service provider.

Prague Vaclav Havel Airport

When flying to Prague, Student Agency bus service provides the easiest way of getting from Prague Airport to Brno (see Prague Airport website). Tickets can be bought at Terminal 1 or online (recommended).

To buy tickets online, go here. At the top of the page, change to English or German (by clicking one of the flags) and select Euro in the neighbouring window. Then proceed by booking your ticket: as a place of departure (“from”) select “Prague, Vaclav Havel Airport Prague” and as a place of arrival (“to”) select “Brno”. Make sure the date is correct. Click “search” and find departure/arrival time that suits you the best. Click the individual “times” to see route details. The last Student Agency bus of the day departs from Prague at about half past 9 p.m., however opting for earlier bus is recommended due to long journey time (see below). Ticket costs  €10.40. Upon payment, you’ll receive electronic bus ticket that you should print and take with you. On the route, you need to change bus once, but the purchased ticket covers the entire journey between Prague and Brno. Student Agency buses are very distinct; their signature colour is yellow. Other bus service providers are also available and you can also travel by train. However, none of these departs directly from Prague Airport. Train ticket from Prague to Brno costs 210 CZK (approx. € 8).

Location of exchange offices at Prague Airport can be found here.

Travelling with Student Agency:

  • Board the yellow bus at Prague Airport (Terminal 1 – under the elevated highway at Parking Lot C). The bus will take you to Prague’s main bus station Florenc where you need to change buses. The direction/destination of your bus as well as the platform it departs from can be found in journey details while booking your ticket online. This part of the journey takes approximately 40-45 minutes with additional 45 minutes of waiting time before departure to Brno.

  • After you’ve changed buses, you will go directly to Brno as there are no other stops on the way. The journey time is approximately 2.5 – 3 hours. Note that the D1 motorway is under reconstruction so the bus can be slightly delayed.

  • Once in Brno, you’ll find yourself at the bus station opposite Gradhotel Brno. From there, you can take a taxi. Depending on the service provider, the ride from the bus station to the hotel (address: Kounicova 6) should cost approximately 100 CZK/ € 4 (payment in Euro should be possible at least with City Taxi). Taxis are stationed at the end of the platform.

  • Alternatively, public transport can be used (20 CZK/ approx. € 0,70 ticket for 15 minutes; can be bought in vending machines or in newsstands). At the nearby Main tram station, take tram number 12 (direction “Technolologicky park”; middle platform) or tram number 4 (direction “Namesti miru”; right platform) and continue to “Česká” stop. The journey takes approximately 6 minutes.

  • From Česká street it is only a short walk to the hotel (approximately 5 minute walk, see map or picture guide).

The Main Train Station is located practically in the city centre, so not much more travelling is needed to reach the hotel. Once outside the train station, buy a public transport ticket (20 CZK/ approx. € 0,70 for 15 minutes; can be bought in vending machines or in newsstands) and take a tram number 12 or 4 (main tram station is located directly outside the train station building) which will take you to “Česká” stop. From there continue on foot (approximately 5 minutes; see map or picture guide). Alternatively take a taxi; taxis are stationed outside the station building (slightly to the left).
